Front Yard Landscaping Tips - Grand Rapids Landscaping Tip of the Day from RRR Lawn

Design for front yard landscaping ideas and plans for backyards usually have different purposes. Most front yards generally follow a purpose of accessibility and invitation. It's where we enter and leave are homes but spend very little time. So usually most of the thought process goes into creating walkways and driveways. Then the design is created around that.
Creating front yard curb appeal is a good idea for adding value, a sense of invitation, and to frame the picture of your home. But you shouldn't have to spend a lot of your budget creating landscaping ideas for most front yards. A simple functional design works best. Then, since the backyard is where most people spend most of their time, you can spend more energy and money on the back.

Grand Rapids Landscaping Tip of the Day from RRR Lawn

One of the most important parts of your home landscape is the area near the foundation of your home. The plantings around the foundation tie the home to the surrounding yard. These foundation plantings and beds are also used hide necessary but unappealing equipment such as air conditioners or power meters, and to soften the harsh areas of the exterior of your home.

Raking in the spring? - RRR Lawn & Landscape Tip of the Day!

Raking your lawn is probably how you finished working in the yard late last fall. In the spring it is a good idea to begin everything with that same rake. Give your yard a thorough, deep raking before you begin to mow or treat the grass.

Weed Control - Grand Rapids Lawn Care Tip of the Day from RRR Lawn

Weed control: Apply a pre-emergent weed killer on lawns to prevent grassy weeds from germinating. Spring broadleaf weeds like dandelions, clovers and plantains, are best prevented by maintaining a proper mowing height and fertilization. After a mild winter, annual weeds that germinate in the fall, like henbit and chickweed, will be more visible and require higher levels of broadleaf weed control through herbicides.

Grand Rapids Lawn Care Tip of the Day from RRR Lawn: Mowing

Mowing: Contrary to popular belief, setting your mower at a very low height can actually increase weeds by exposing the soil surface to sunlight and removing stored nutrients in leaf blades. Cool weather grasses, such as bluegrass, ryegrass and fescues, should maintain a height of 2.5 to 3.5 inches.

RRR Lawn Care Tip of the Day! Don't Put a Dollar Plant in a Dime Hole!

Always dig the hole for your plant wider than the pot size the plant came in.  This allows for proper soil amendments as needed and creates open space for new root growth.

Is Weed Fabric Necessary? - Grand Raids, MI Lawn Care Tip of the Day

Yes, always, if using decorative landscape stone or other aggregate to cover your landscape beds.  Definitely No, if using mulch because the mulch itself will suppress weeds when maintained at the proper depth.  Weed fabric is unnecessary with the use of mulch in planting beds and often times becomes exposed after the mulch degrades and not reapplied properly.
