Raking - Spring Lawn Care Tip of the Day from RRR Lawn

Raking will be your first task of spring lawn care. Okay, I can hear the groans coming from all lands near and far, wherever grassy carpets are cultivated: "But we already raked leaves in the fall!" Sorry, but raking is for more than just removing leaves: it's for controlling thatch, too. A thatch build-up of more than 1/2 inch is considered excessive.
Thatch is the reason why I recommend that, when you rake leaves in the fall, you make the effort to rake deeply. Don't just skim the surface, so as to remove the leaves. A deep raking will remove thatch, too, allowing you to kill two birds with one stone. Even if you followed this advice in fall, I still recommend a spring raking: it will remove grass blades that died over the winter -- dead blades that are just waiting to become thatch!
But there's often another good reason for a spring raking. As you survey your lawn in spring, see if there are any matted patches, in which the grass blades are all stuck together. This can be caused by a disease known as "snow mold." New grass may have difficulty penetrating these matted patches. But a light raking will be sufficient to solve this problem.
Just when you should perform any of these spring lawn care tasks will depend upon the climate of your own region. But Mother Nature provides palpable cues in some cases. For instance, when you're pretty sure the snow season (if you have one) is over in your region, begin raking. Applying pre-emergent herbicides (see Tip #6) should be done sometime between the time the local forsythia bushes stop blooming and the time the local lilac bushes begin blooming.

Grand Rapids Fall Lawn Care Tip of the Day

Correct soil pH: if your lawn is not performing well, have your soil tested. If the soil test should show a need to reduce acidity, apply lime now. If alkalinity needs to be reduced, apply sulfur.  RRR Lawn & Landscape can test your soil pH levels.  Contact us today at 616-893-5765 or visit www.rrrlawn.com!

When Should You Water Your Lawn? And How Much?

Deep and infrequent watering is better for lawns than frequent sprinkles, which promote shallow root growth, says RRR Lawn & Landscape, In general, lawns need about one inch of water per week to maintain green color and active growth.

Lawns that receive less than that will likely go into dormancy. To stay alive, dormant lawns should still receive at least 1 inch of water per month.

To check the output of a sprinkler, scatter some pie tins around the yard to see how much water collects in a specific length of time. Having a rain gauge ($5 to $20) will help you keep track of how much water the lawn receives naturally. Allowing a cool-season lawn to go dormant in the summer can save hundreds of gallons of water, depending on the size of your lawn.

Grand Rapids Lawn Care Tip of the Day!

Don't Scalp Your Lawn!

Leaving the lawn a little longer during hot dry weather helps shade and protect the root system. It can also reduce moisture loss. Increase the height of cut on your mower to at least 2.5 inches.

6 Tips for Keeping Your Grand Rapids Lawn Healthy and Green This Summer

6 Tips for keeping your lawn nice and green this summer!

1. Be careful not to overwater. Overwatering produces shallow roots, making it more vulnerable to heat or pests.

2. The besttime to water is early morning, because less water is lost to evaporation.

3. The worst time to water is in the evening, when too little water is lost to evaporation. Diseases are more likely to develop in a wet lawn.

4. Raise that mower and let grass blades grow to 3" in height. Taller blades have deeper roots. Also, higher blades provide more shade for soil, and shade also has the benefit of stunting the growth of weeds.

5. Maintain the lawn, watching for weeds. Weed growth can increase thanks to the heat. Weeds tend to be more resilient.

6. Give the lawn 1 to 2" of water once a week. As a rule of thumb: Running sprinklers for one hour provides 1 inch of water to the area it covers, two inches in two hours, etc.

Front Yard Landscaping Tips - Grand Rapids Landscaping Tip of the Day from RRR Lawn

Design for front yard landscaping ideas and plans for backyards usually have different purposes. Most front yards generally follow a purpose of accessibility and invitation. It's where we enter and leave are homes but spend very little time. So usually most of the thought process goes into creating walkways and driveways. Then the design is created around that.
Creating front yard curb appeal is a good idea for adding value, a sense of invitation, and to frame the picture of your home. But you shouldn't have to spend a lot of your budget creating landscaping ideas for most front yards. A simple functional design works best. Then, since the backyard is where most people spend most of their time, you can spend more energy and money on the back.

Grand Rapids Landscaping Tip of the Day from RRR Lawn

One of the most important parts of your home landscape is the area near the foundation of your home. The plantings around the foundation tie the home to the surrounding yard. These foundation plantings and beds are also used hide necessary but unappealing equipment such as air conditioners or power meters, and to soften the harsh areas of the exterior of your home.

Raking in the spring? - RRR Lawn & Landscape Tip of the Day!

Raking your lawn is probably how you finished working in the yard late last fall. In the spring it is a good idea to begin everything with that same rake. Give your yard a thorough, deep raking before you begin to mow or treat the grass.

Weed Control - Grand Rapids Lawn Care Tip of the Day from RRR Lawn

Weed control: Apply a pre-emergent weed killer on lawns to prevent grassy weeds from germinating. Spring broadleaf weeds like dandelions, clovers and plantains, are best prevented by maintaining a proper mowing height and fertilization. After a mild winter, annual weeds that germinate in the fall, like henbit and chickweed, will be more visible and require higher levels of broadleaf weed control through herbicides.

Grand Rapids Lawn Care Tip of the Day from RRR Lawn: Mowing

Mowing: Contrary to popular belief, setting your mower at a very low height can actually increase weeds by exposing the soil surface to sunlight and removing stored nutrients in leaf blades. Cool weather grasses, such as bluegrass, ryegrass and fescues, should maintain a height of 2.5 to 3.5 inches.
